How to shorten a separating zipper

Sewing machine: zigzag over edge of zipper at new stopping point
Metal zipper: Remove teeth with pliers at new stopping point. Remove stoppers from end of zipper and replace them at new stopping point.
Plastic zipper: Use a woodburning tool to melt plastic teeth together at the new stopping point
