Words that bug me

Posted on Dec 5 2009 | Posted in Personal | 4 Comments

I’m not going to claim to be grammatically perfect, but there are a couple words that are often misused, and it’s one of my pet peeves.

Literally: People often use this word when they don’t actually mean “literally” – for example, “In politics, you literally have to sell your soul to the devil”. Well, actually, you don’t (or do you? maybe this was a bad example, but you get what I mean).

Modern: It doesn’t mean “new”! It refers to a specific movement in the arts that – by now – is no longer new. The word you’re looking for is “Contemporary”, not “Modern”.

I like the words they come up with on ESPN…my curent favorite is “physicality.” For example, “Vince Young showed his physicality in getting away from that defender.” Sportscasters use some great words…they want you to think they’re real journalists, and then they throw in something like “physicality.”

Wow, that’s a good point – I don’t think I’ve noticed that one before. Sometimes they say things that are clearly not what they intend to say.

Here’s another one I heard on some football game recently. Some defensive lineman was “efforting” to get to the ball carrier.

I wonder how I would do if my job was to talk for four hours straight.

Have your say!
