Latest tracks?

I’m brainstorming a little on adding a little sidebar-ish note on this site to display the latest song I listened to on my computer.

I use Banshee for listening to music and managing my music collection, and I’m not too interested in using Last.fm, Pandora, or any other online service. Banshee does have command-line options that will return information about the current track, and a simple solution could be to write a little script that collects this info and sends it up to my server whenever I play a new song.

Of course, I’m not sure I want to admit that, for example, my playlist just skipped from Le Banquet Celeste by Olivier Messiaen to Appalachian Spring by Copland, and it’s headed to a few other places soon – some well-known music and a few dark corners of the contemporary music world. Like the Symphony #3 of Penderecki. And some more Messiaen.

I’m going to try to find a little fancier solution if I can. Maybe. A Banshee plugin to work with WordPress would be ideal.
